Boletus barrowsii Smith Cap 6-25cm across, convex becoming broadly convex to flat; whitish, creamy with a pinkish tinge, to buff; smooth or suede-like. Tubes up to 25mm deep; white to yellowish. Pores small; white or pallid when young, becoming yellow to greenish yellow in age. Stem 60-200 X 20-60mm, slightly enlarged below in young specimens, firm, solid; whitish to buff, sometimes with brownish stains; reticulate, particularly over the upper section. Flesh thick; white, unchanging or blueing very lightly near the tubes. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores spindle-shaped to ellipsoid, smooth, 13-15 x 4-5µ. Deposit dark olive-brown. Habitat singly, scattered, or in groups under coniferous and deciduous trees. Common. Found in southwestern North America, especially abundant in New Mexico and Arizona. Season August-January. Edible excellent. |
